HTML - <html> Tag

The HTML <html> tag is crucial for an HTML document, marking its beginning and end. It represents the root of the HTML document.

The <html> tag specifies as the container for all other HTML tags or elements except for the <!Doctype> declaration, which determines the opening of <html> tag. All HTML elements must be placed within the opening <html> and closing </html> tags.

Syntax

Following is the syntax of <html> tag −

<html lang = "language code">
   Content...
</html>

Attributes

The HTML <html> tag supports both Global and Event attributes of HTML. Additionally, it accepts some specific attribute, which is listed bellow.

  • xmlns: This attribute represents the XML name-space attribute, which is necessary if we want our content to confirm to XHTML. The default value is http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml.
Note: In HTML documents, we should always include the "lang" attribute in the <html> tag to specify the language of our document. By default, the language is unknown, and accepted values are language code.

Example: Creating <html> Tag

Here, we are creating a simple HTML page to demonstrate the usage of the <html> tag. Below, we will see how the <html> tag is used in an HTML document.

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html> <!--html opening tag-->
<head>
   <title>HTML html Tag</title>
</head>
<body>
   <p>Actual content goes here... </p>
</body>
</html>  <!--html closing tag-->

Example: <html> tag with Lang Attribute

In this example, we create an HTML document using the lang attribute. This code defines a basis web-page structure with a little and two paragraphs in the body section.

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en"> <!--html opening tag-->
<head>
   <title>HTML html Tag</title>
</head>
<body>
   <p>Actual content goes here... </p>
   <p>This one is a body tag, your contents start from here! </p>
</body>
</html> <!--html closing tag-->
